thor -
Thor: The God of Thunder
The God of the storm and the son of Odin and Jord.
Also God of wrath, he needed to be watched in his youth
by two spirits of lightning, Vingir and Hlora, to appease him.
Thor is one of the most powerful of the Gods.
He is married to Sif, Goddess of Fertility, and his mistress is Jarnsaxa, their sons being Magni, Modi and their daughter,
Thrud.
The God is helped by Thialfi who is his servant and the messenger of most Gods.
Thor is described as an imposing and powerful man with a red beard and two burning eyes.
Despite his fierce appearance, he is known as the protector of Aesirs and Humans against evil.
Thor- pulled by goats Beliefs about him indicated that during storms, he crossed the heavens
with his chariot pulled by the goats (or goats) Tanngrisni and Tanngnost.
Lightning flashes occurred every time he twirled his Mjöllnir war hammer.
He also wears the Mengingjard belt, which doubles his already exceptional strength.
He resides in his Bilskirnir residence in the Trudheim region (Power Square).
Development: His enemies the Giants were in fact similar to him, his size
being important, as much as his appetite because he was able to swallow a whole beef at every meal!
Mjöllnir, his war hammer, of course requires the belt of
force to be able to lift it but also gloves not to be burned with one
on its sides continuously worn with a red iron.
With a short handle and a huge head, he never missed his target and returned to the right hand of his
launcher, which also explains the use of gloves.
He was a symbol of fertility but also of destruction, renewal and luck.
His main companion is Loki, although they were often angry.
The episodes with the Geirroed Giant are the most revealing of their relationships.
Thor, the executioner of the Giants, killed several of their leaders, such as Hrungnir, Thrym, Geirroed and his daughters,
and dozens of others.
It was during his trip to Utgard that he met his two servants Thialfi and his sister Roskva in Midgard.
The episode of Utgard is the most symbolic of Thor's strength but his lack of discernment.
The Giants prepared a series of tests for him where Thialfi failed to pass the Giant Hugi in speed and Thor, a poor drinker, could not lift a tank off the ground or beat an "old, old woman"...even Loki was shamefully beaten by his lack of appetite.
In fact, the head of the Ice Giants admitted to having played witchcraft, Loki having faced a barrel of powder, Thialfi having run against his own thought and Thor having tried to swallow the Ocean and lift the gigantic snake Jormungandr and finally to fight old age.
To conclude, Utgard in turn disappeared, proving that the immense Giant Skrymir, having shown them the way to get there, was also only an illusion intended to lead them astray.
Synthesis: Through all Thor's adventures, we can see the symbolism of
its destructive powers and its ability to destroy the enemies of the Gods, its purpose being
"to break their legs, smash their skulls and break their backs."
He was therefore the destroyer of evil and yet Loki's travel companion, their
characters complementing each other and they "greatly appreciated each other's company"...
Notes : Thor is the equal of Zeus (Greek) and Indra (Hindu) and even Jupiter, the
calendars bearing their respective names for Thursday.
Moreover, Thor was more loved and popular than Odin, the God not asking for any sacrifice and his good nature
left no ambiguity like his father.
In fact many Icelanders and Norwegians have names of relatives close to him, such as Thorsten...
Thor and Jormungandr Finally, Thor had a formidable enemy, the snake Jormungandr, whom he tried to
fishing with Hymir who let him go so terrified he was.
At Ragnarök, Thor broke his skull with his hammer but was drowned under a stream of venom that gushed out
of the monster's gaping jaws.
